Walking into a new gym can feel nerve-racking, especially if you have never worked out before. So here is a plain walkthrough of a first visit at CrossFit Sympatheia, in the order it happens, so nothing catches you off guard. We are glad you are thinking about coming.

Before You Walk In: What to Wear, Bring, and Skip Worrying About

You do not need much. Here is the short list.

What to wear

  • Comfortable workout clothes you can move, squat, and stretch in, like shorts or leggings and a T-shirt or tank.
  • Athletic shoes with a flat, stable sole. Everyday training shoes are perfect. Super cushy running shoes work in a pinch, but something flatter is better for lifting.
  • Hair tied back if it is long.

What to bring

  • A water bottle. You will want it.
  • A small towel if you like to wipe off sweat.
  • A light snack for after if you tend to get hungry after a workout.
  • Your kids, if they need to come along. They are always welcome, and our coaches are happy to help keep little ones happy while you move.

What you can leave at home

  • Fancy gear. No belts, wraps, lifting shoes, or special equipment needed. We have everything you will use.
  • Experience. You do not need to know any movements or terms. Your coach will teach you step by step.
  • The pressure to be “in shape” first. We will scale the workout to exactly where you are today.
  • Worry about doing it wrong. Our job is to coach you, and we will be right beside you the whole time.

Just bring yourself and an open mind. We will take care of the rest.

Arriving at CrossFit Sympatheia in Lake Forest

When you arrive, just walk in through the front door. One of our coaches will be there to greet you, introduce themselves, and show you around.

You do not need to come more than 5 minutes early. If you would like extra time to settle in, meet a few people, or ask questions, you are always welcome to come earlier.

Honestly, the hardest part is just getting through that door. Once you do, we have got you.

Meeting Your Coach and Talking Through Your Starting Point

Your coach greets you at the front door, gives you a quick tour, and introduces you to a few members before class starts. Then they ask you some questions so they know where you are starting from:

  • What is your name, and what brought you in today?
  • Have you done CrossFit or any kind of group fitness before?
  • What are you hoping to get out of this? Strength, energy, community, stress relief?
  • Any injuries, surgeries, or aches we should know about?
  • Anything going on health-wise we should keep in mind, like a recent baby, pregnancy, or something your doctor mentioned?
  • How are you feeling about today: excited, nervous, a little of both?
  • Is there anything you are worried about or do not want to do?
  • What does your schedule usually look like, and which class times might work for you?

And here is what your coach will tell you: we will scale everything to you today, so go at your own pace. I will be watching your movement and helping you along the way. If anything does not feel right, just let me know and we will change it. There is no such thing as a dumb question here.

How a Gym for Beginners Handles Warm-Up and Movement Practice

Every class starts at the whiteboard. Your coach walks everyone through the day’s workout, explains the movements, and shares how they can be scaled. Then the whole class moves into a guided warm-up together, so you will never be left wondering what to do.

The warm-up starts easy, just getting your blood flowing. That might mean a little rowing, biking, or jogging, plus simple movements like arm circles, lunges, and air squats.

From there it builds into a warm-up designed around that day’s workout. If you will be squatting, you practice squats. If there is a barbell piece, you start with an empty bar or a PVC pipe and slowly build up. Each round gets a little more dynamic as your body warms up, so by the time the strength piece or workout starts, you feel loose, ready, and more confident in the movements.

As a beginner, this is also where your coach spends extra time with you, watching how you move, giving simple cues, and making sure you feel comfortable before anything gets harder. The warm-up takes about 10-15 minutes, and it is one of the best parts of class for learning.

What the Workout Looks Like When You Have Never Done One

You will do the same class as everyone else, side by side with the rest of the group. The difference is how your workout is built for you.

Your focus is on the foundations: learning to move well, with good form, one movement at a time. Your coach adjusts the weights, reps, and movements so you can practice them safely and build confidence. More experienced members may be pushing heavier weights or faster times, but your goal is simply to move well.

Your coach will not ask for more intensity until they know you can move safely. Speed and heavier weight come later, once your body is ready. So you never have to worry about being asked to do something you cannot do.

The workout portion usually runs about 10-20 minutes, and it might be a strength piece, a short conditioning workout, or both. Your coach will be right there with you, cheering you on and helping the whole way.

After Class: Soreness, Questions, and Deciding on a Next Step

Once the workout is done, take a minute to catch your breath. You did it. Class finishes with a cooldown, a few minutes of easy movement and stretching to help your body recover.

Then comes one of our favorite parts: hanging out. You will see members high-fiving, chatting, and cheering on anyone still finishing. Your coach will check in to see how you felt, answer questions, and talk about what is next, like which classes might fit your schedule.

No question is too small. Wondering about soreness, what to eat, how often to come, or what a movement name means? Ask your coach, or any member around you. Everyone here was new once, and they are happy to help.

If questions pop up later that night (they always do), just send us a message. If you are ready to try a first class, reach out and we will get you set up.
